U.S. bank director disappears with $17 million of investors' money

ATLANTA - After penning a rambling confession to financial regulators and writing notes to his family, a south Georgia bank director boarded a ferry in Florida and disappeared.
Now local and federal investigators are trying to determine whether Aubrey Lee Price killed himself, as his lengthy confession would have them believe, or whether he slipped away with $17 million of investors' money. His family has told authorities they believe he's dead, but federal investigators aren't so sure and have offered $20,000 for information leading to his arrest.
"My depression and discouragement have driven me to deep anxiety, fear and shame. I am emotionally overwhelmed and incapable of continuing in this life," says the confession letter investigators believe was written by Price.
"I created false statements, covered up my losses and deceived and hurt the very people I was trying to help," the letter says.

Chris Brown's "Fortune" tops Billboard album chart

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rapper Chris Brown scored his second No. 1 debut with new album "Fortune" topping the Billboard 200 chart on Wednesday, despite failing to impress critics in early reviews last week.
"Fortune" sold 134,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a considerably lower debut than the singer's previous album "F.A.M.E.," which also reached No. 1 with 270,000 copies in its debut week last year.
Brown's was the only new album in the top 10 this week.
A surprise entry from pop star Katy Perry took the No. 2 slot on the album chart. Her "Teenage Dream" record, released almost two years ago in August 2010, notched 80,000 unit sales last week, fueled by her new movie "Katy Perry: Part Of Me" and Amazon.com's offer of the album for 99 cents on July 3.
The Amazon.com offer, which saw several albums priced at 99 cents for one day only, also pushed Gotye's "Making Mirrors," Fun.'s "Some Nights" and the Black Keys' "El Camino" albums back into the top 10 of the Billboard 200, at No. 6, No. 7 and No. 10 respectively.
Justin Bieber's "Believe" held steady at No. 3, Maroon 5's "Overexposed" notched No. 4, and Linkin Park's "Living Things" fell from the top spot last week to No. 5.

Scientist names marine parasite after Bob Marley

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — A tiny blood-sucking parasite that infests fish on Caribbean coral reefs has been named after Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley.
Arkansas State University marine biologist Paul Sikkel discovered the parasite off the U.S. Virgin Islands a decade ago but it was only recently unveiled as "Gnathia marleyi" as an homage to the singer.
Sikkel says he dubbed the tiny crustacean due to his "respect and admiration" for Marley, who died in 1981.
The National Science Foundation says the creature is a new species within the family of gnathiids, parasites commonly found on coral reefs that are ecologically similar to blood-sucking ticks on land. It infests some fish that inhabit reefs of the shallow eastern Caribbean.
Celebrities such as comedian Stephen Colbert and singer Beyonce have had insects named after them.

Igbo declare State of Biafra Nov 5 – We can’t take this Killing by Northerners anymore.

A pro-Biafra group, Biafra Zionist Movement, BZM, announced, yesterday, that it had commenced the process to launch the struggle for a State of Biafra with the international community, saying that the formal declaration of the new Biafra Republic had been slated for November 5.This came as Conference of Igbo Youth Organizations, CIYO, warned that Ndigbo “would no longer watch in silence while our brothers and sisters are slaughtered like animals” in the Northern States.
National President of BZM, Benjamin Onwuka, at a briefing said what prevented the realization of Biafra republic over the years was the inability to get the support of world powers, like the United States of America to back the project.
“As we approach the end of 13 years since the mobilization and struggle for Biafran Independence began under the aegis of MASSOB and other groups, the people of Biafra have not made much effort in realizing our dreams because the struggle has been internalized since 1999,” Onwuka said.
He expressed regrets that the international community did not know the aspirations of the Biafra people, saying “Biafra must therefore be internationalized because the forces preventing the dreams for our independence are vested in the United Kingdom.
Biafra can only be achieved when we secure the support of the United States of America; the day USA comes to our side, that day we shall be free from Nigeria; the story of South Sudan where a bloody civil war was fought for over 24 years is a typical example.”
Meanwhile, the Igbo youths in a statement endorsed by 10 youth leaders, including the National Coordinator, Igbo Youth Grand Alliance, Dr. Uchenna Uchehara, who read it after their emergency meeting in Owerri yesterday said: “Events of the past few months in Nigeria have become very disturbing to stakeholders, especially the Igbo nation that played a major role in the founding of Nigeria and inspite of the tragedies of the Biafran war, resolved to give total support to one united Nigeria”.
They lamented that the ugly experience of Ndigbo in Nigeria had been the persistent and unprovoked killings of Igbo citizens outside Igbo land.

SHOCKER:German Man Marries His Dying Cat!!

A 39 year old German man named Uwe Mitzscherlich made the most bizarre decision of marrying his ailing cat named Cecilia. Mitzscherlich married his cat after the animal fell ill and vets told him it might not live much longer.

According to reports, Uwe Mitzscherlich, 39, paid an actress 300 euros (£260,$395) to officiate at the ceremony, as marrying an animal is illegal in Germany. Mr Mitzscherlich said he had wanted to tie the knot before his asthmatic cat Cecilia died. The cat and groom have lived together for 10 years.

“Cecilia is such a trusting creature. We cuddle all the time and she has always slept in my bed,” Mr Mitzscherlich, a postman from the eastern town of Possendorf, told Bild. Actress Christin-Maria Lohri, who officiated the ceremony, was quoted as saying: “At first I thought it was a joke. But for Mr Mitzscherlich it’s a dream come true”.

Chevron Workers Left To Die On Platform, Survivors Say

Newly obtained testimonies from Chevron workers paint a sharply different picture of the days leading up to the deadly Jan. 16, 2012 blowout at a drilling rig that took two lives.
According to the U.S. oil company, there were no requests to evacuate the KS Endeavor rig and that staff on board did not call a halt to work although they were entitled to.

But new accounts from four of the platform workers describes workers pleading to be evacuated as smoke billowed for a borehole. The subsequent explosion engulfed the rig in flames, causing the two deaths.

The new information was shared with an investigative reporter from Reuters by Britain’s Rail, Maritime and Transport trade union, or RMT. The union claims the documents - transcripts of accounts from three workers – are genuine but that names of witnesses have been withheld to protect their employment prospects.

The accounts were backed up by subsequent interviews in Nigeria with a worker who was also on the rig.

Field Offshore Design Engineering, or FODE, which hired the subcontractor KS Drilling, declined to comment, citing confidentiality clauses in its contract with KS Drilling preventing them from making public any information about work for Chevron.

The fire that followed the blast burned on the rig for 46 days until March 2. Chevron drilled a relief well to stem the gas leak, sealing it on June 18. In an email to Reuters on July 2, Chevron said that an investigation with the Nigerian authorities concluded that an entry of high pressure gas in the wellbore had caused the failure of equipment and fire.
The newly-released accounts convey rising panic from some of those on the platform, who fearing a blowout, checked each morning the volume of smoke billowing from the drilling borehole.

"Chevron knew for over a week that the well was unstable yet they refused to evacuate us," said one of the rig workers who gave his account to the RMT union.

A Nigerian worker who was aboard the rig at the time of the blast said many wanted to be evacuated.

"At almost every point in time, we saw thick smoke coming out of the open hole, and we were all scared like hell because we could see a disaster happening any moment yet they (Chevron) did not evacuate us -- why, I do not know," the witness said.

"This is the reason so many of us survived because we were all aware that it was going to happen, but just didn't know when," he said.

The faulty Funiwa 1A well has since sealed by the San Ramon-based Chevron but a fine of $3 billion for environmental damages against the company is still pending

Lagos Doctors Upset Over Governor Fashola's Refusal To Pay Their Salaries or Honour CONMESS Agreement

A fresh crisis seems to be brewing between the Government of Lagos State and its medical doctors.
In a new press statement signed by the chairman of the Lagos Medical Guild, Dr. Muyiwa Odusote, the doctors are complaining about their unpaid salaries for the month of May; an undue deduction for the month of April; contemptuous treatment by the State Government; and a persistent show of unconcern for the CONMESS agreement it reached with them before it illegally sacked all 788 doctor two months ago.
The Guild decried the victimisation by the Lagos State Health Commission of a Principal Medical Officer who recently had a verbal exchange with one of the doctors recruited by the Government during the period the doctors were agitating for the implementation of the CONMESS agreement.
The doctors are also unhappy that the subject matter of their grievance with the Lagos State Government is still being treated with levity by the government of Babatunde Fashola.
Since the resumption of medical services in the hospitals, the Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association and the Medical Guild say they have written a series of letters to the Lagos State Government requesting meetings and mechanisms to be put in place to resolve all the outstanding issues that led to and emanated from the recent health sector crisis, including CONMESS.
The government, however, is yet to invite the NMA or the Medical Guild to any meeting to look into these issues. “The only correspondence from government was to inform us about a committee it set up to review wage matters of health workers,” the statement said. “We however do not know the composition of this committee, neither have we received any correspondence from the committee.”
It will be recalled that the Lagos State Government said it sacked all 788 doctors owing to an industrial action hinging on their demand for the implementation of the CONMESS agreement in Lagos State. The CONMESS policy was initiated by the Federal Government and is said to be the basic minimum salary for all the medical doctors nationwide.
Doctors in Lagos State had demanded for the implementation of the agreement, but the State Government responded by sacking all 788 doctors in its employ.
Several protests, court actions and solidarity strike actions by other unions and bodies, including NUPENG, followed the illegal sacking of the doctors, but the State Government said it recalled the doctors only because of the intervention of some prominent members of the State's ruling Action Congress of Nigeria.

Hoodlums Kill Ex-army General Sylvester K. Iruh, In Lagos

A retired Brigadier-General of the Army, Sylvester K. Iruh, was on Saturday July 7, killed at the popular Berger Bridge on the outskirts of Lagos by those suspected to be hoodlums as he attempted to attend to his car.

He was said to be returning from Ilorin when his car had a flat tyre.

An Eyewitness and a close member of the family of the slain Army General told us that the Army General and a devout Baptist was returning from a burial ceremony of a member of his church when the incident happened at about 7pm.

According to the account, Brig-General Sylvester K.Iruh, suddenly had a flat as he approached the Long Berger Bridge near the cattle market. As he attempted to attend with the help of three of his church members in the vehicle, he was alerted by a concerned motorist, an owner of a towing van who plies the road regularly to quickly hop into his car and leave the area as it is a "black spot", a notorious den of Hausa/Fulani criminal gangs who rob, stab, and kill their victims in cold blood".

The witness further narrated that on getting the alert from concerned motorists, the retired Army General who hails from. Boji-Boji Owa, near Agbor, in Ika North-East of Delta State, and retired in January 2009,immediately asked other occupants hop into the car so the manage the faulty car out of the "danger zone."

But before they could drive off, the hoodlums suddenly jumped out of the bush with daggers, bows, arrows and other dangerous weapons demanding money, which the General offered to give to them.

Confirming the incident to us, the wife of the slain General, Mrs Iruh said;"please help me tell both the President Goodluck Jonathan, federal government and Governor of Lagos state government, Babatunde Fashola, and security agencies to clear the place so that more innocent women would not be made young widows.

On that same day, an Okada man was also stabbed and his ear chopped off and rushed to a Emergency and Accident hospital at 7UP,lagos where my husband was rushed to".

"They have made me an unexpected young widow. Government should move into the cattle market by the long Berger bridge and save the lives of innocent Nigerians",Mrs Iruh lamented.

Brig-General Iruh served in his last posting as Commandant Army Records, Lokoja until he was retired along with 11 Generals and 94 other officers in 2009.

Family Of 8, Friend Die In Sleep ... After Burial Of Mother

Grief and sorrow enveloped yesterday Umuakuru village in Emekuku, Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State following the mysterious death of nine members of a family whose bodies were discovered in their rooms early hours of the day. The family had buried their 98-year-old mother, Mrs Felicia Njoku on Saturday, July 7 in their country home.

The deceased include Mr. Pascal Njoku, his wife Juliana and their five children, Ebere (first daughter), Ifunanya (second daughter), Chibueze (son) Jackline (third daughter) and Uchechi (last daughter). Others, who also died along with the Njokus, were Mr. Njoku’s sister, Christina Uba (nee Njoku) and her friend Catherine who accompanied her to the burial. A family relation who pleaded anonymity told Daily Sun that with the burial of their mother over and attendant funeral activities completed, the embattled family retired to bed late in the night but could not wake up the following day.

However, fingers were being pointed at a member of the family whom the source said had earlier threatened to deal with the late Njoku and his family over a lingering family problem. Not prepared to take chances over the threat, Njoku’s wife, Juliana reportedly compelled him to relocate herself and their children for safety, but her advice was ignored. When Daily Sun visited the deceased’s residence, their corpses were yet to be taken to the mortuary as armed police and soldiers cordoned off the area to prevent possible breakdown of law and order as the youths from the area were sporting for action. An elderly man from the village told Daily Sun that the corpses would not be removed from the compound until certain rituals were performed to appease the gods of the land.

“We have never witnessed this kind of tragedy in our village. I am 90 years of age, this type of calamity had not happened before and something serious must be done to appease the gods.” Another source told Daily Sun that a pastor, who visited the family last Wednesday before the burial, suffered a spiritual attack and was unable to continue the prayer session. A woman, who narrated her ordeal to Daily Sun also, said a day to the burial she defeacated in her dress unknowingly and was rushed to the hospital. Suspicion of the victims’ death from fumes of generating set was dismissed by eyewitness, who said the family had none.

I Know Someone Who Can End Boko Haram Menance - Shehu Sani

If claims by the leader of the Northern Civil Society Coalition, Mallam Shehu Sani are anything to go by, it may take only a phone call from the Presidency to put an end to the Boko Haram menace ravaging the North.

According to Sani, if President Jonathan calls him today, he would give him the name and contact of one person whose intervention will lead to a successful dialogue with the militant sect.

Sani who spoke in an interview with The Guardian during the week, insisted that indeed, the person in question is somebody also known to the president.

“…I have repeatedly said that if President Jonathan can make a phone call to me today and ask me of one person who can solve the problem, I will give him the name of the person. And apart from the person, I don’t see the possibility of any other person whom the group can trust,” the activist declared.

Sani also indicted some elements in the Jonathan government over the failure of past attempts at dialogue, saying these persons may have been sabotaging such efforts either in the mistaking belief that force can solve the problem or because they are deriving some pecuniary gains from the situation.

“Boko Haram has agreed to a term of ceasefire, has agreed to dialogue, but has consistently been undermined by elements within the government who either choose to do so on the grounds that they believe the use of force can end the group or are sabotaging dialogue because they believe they are profiting from the system as it is.

“Before now, I used to think that Boko Haram was completely opposed to peace or ceasefire, but in the few occasions that I have been involved in seeking a way out of this problem, I have seen that much of the sabotage came from the side of the government,” he said

Confirming reports that he facilitated former President Obasanjo’s meeting with the family of a member of the Boko Haram sect sometime ago, Sani insisted that if the Federal Government showed sincere, dialogue could sooner than later end the activities of the militant sect.
